An exhibition I’ve visited

I went to the opening of Gunnur Ozsoy’s exhibition at PG Art Gallery last Tuesday, and fetched some photos.

I hadn’t seen a work of hers before; so when I heard I was going to see sculptures made of felt, I actually dreamed of something totally different. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in what I experienced. After I shook the feeling off and tried to see the sculptures from an objective point of view, I noticed that every piece was tagged separately; you know, every piece was sold separately. Their composition did not matter so much, the sculptures were there as products in a store and were composed that way just to attract the customer. I will not go as far (not this time) to say they were works of art, the kind that should only be exhibited. But, please, would it be too much to ask selling them as compositions, for instance, the artist would go and install the pieces herself? This would probably keep the total meaning of the sculptures. Or, I don’t think so but, the reason could be that the artist actually wanted the meaning of the pieces shifted as they moved from one place to another. But I don’t think so, because if it were the intention, we the viewers would be free to carry them within the gallery to experience “the  shifting of meaning by changing the place and composition”, but we weren’t. Well, from where I stand, I see that the sculptures actually were products in a store and were composed that way so to attract the customer.

All in all, if I were an art critique, I would consider Ms. Ozsoy a talented crafter, but a “not so deep” artist…
